A DBS check is a process that is conducted to assess the criminal record history of an individual. The DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) is an executive agency of the Home Office, responsible for conducting these checks. The level of DBS check required depends on the nature of the job and the level of contact an individual will have with vulnerable groups.
Basic DBS
Discloses unspent convictions and conditional cautions held on an individual’s criminal record. It is available to anyone, including individuals and employers, and can be requested for a range of purposes, such as employment, volunteering, or licensing.
Standard DBS
Discloses spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings, as well as any other relevant information held by the police. Standard check is required for certain roles, such as working in finance or correctional facilities.
Enhanced DBS
Discloses the same information as standard checks, as well as any relevant non-conviction information supplied by police forces. Enhanced check is required for roles that involve working with children or adults in receipt of healthcare or personal care.
Enhanced with Barred List(s)
Indicates whether or not an individual is on the child and/or adult Barred Lists maintained by the DBS. If an individual’s name appears on the Barred List, they are not allowed to work or volunteer in certain roles, such as teaching, healthcare, or social care.
